About This Project

Leading up to and directly following the 2016 election, American manufacturing and trade policies took center stage in many political and news media discussions. Our client, the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM), began tracking an alarming rise in false claims and myths related to trade and manufacturing and tapped Winking Fish for creative counsel in how to set the record straight and shift conversations back to the facts.

We worked with AAM to create a special, pocket-sized booklet that highlighted and broke down several of the largest and most startling myths, leading readers to the truth in each statement. The book used black and white facing pages to help contrast the myths and facts, placing the facts within red boxes to draw the eye to the factual statements. The “Little Blue Collar” book used AAM’s brand colors and icon identity system to extend the AAM brand into a new space. To do so seamlessly, Winking Fish developed a graphical icon to represent and add emphasis to the irrationality of each myth. The graphics were created in a style complementary to the icons Winking Fish developed to represent AAM’s primary issue areas (jobs, trade, workforce, infrastructure, etc.).

The book was so successful as a visual communications tool that AAM updated the content and added more myths in 2018.
