Our Team

Winking Fish is a small and mighty team. With more than 60 years of collective experience, we have fine-tuned the art of balancing design choices with smart content strategy to help you achieve your most effective communications solution.

Principal

Kieran Daly

The golden age of MTV created a music and design junkie out of Kieran. For more than 20 years, he has developed and maintained cohesive branding campaigns for clients in a variety of industries, from healthcare and education, to labor and finance. Since founding Winking Fish in 2007, Kieran has led his team to craft powerful visual messaging across all types of media, from billboards to Facebook. By adhering to a strict philosophy of “strategy leads, design enhances,” Kieran’s design work has elevated the efforts of the International Monetary Fund, Alliance for American Manufacturing, Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, Mirus Futures, BlueGreen Alliance and the Economic Policy Institute.

When he’s not designing, Kieran can be heard singing with his vocal band, Cartoon Johnny, or found flipping through the stacks at the local record store looking for additions to his eclectic vinyl collection.

Director, Strategy & Engagement

Maria Gallagher

Maria has almost 20 years of experience in marketing and communications, with a focus on campaign strategy and content development. She recently joined her husband and the team at Winking Fish after having spent more than a decade at FleishmanHillard, where she ran the public sector division of the Washington, D.C. office, as well as the agency at-large.

Maria’s communications career has taken her out of the coal region of Pennsylvania, across the country several times and even to the Amazon rainforest for her work on social issues and education campaigns. Outside of work, Maria enjoys reading and writing, has a flair for fashion, a love of travel and a knack for baking delicious cookies. She is an avid, life-long fan of the Super Bowl Champion (FINALLY!!!) Philadelphia Eagles and resides in Arlington with her rock star (and graphic designer) husband and their brazen kitty, Jesse Pinkman.

Art Director

Justine Hirshfeld

Justine is a native Washingtonian, who was exposed to the world of design at an early age. The daughter of a photographer and a stylist, she visited museums and art galleries frequently while learning to use her visual instincts to inform the world she lives in. Most recently, Justine was an Art Director at Science News magazine, a component of an education-based scientific literacy non-profit. Prior to that she was a senior designer at Jessica Weber Design, a New York City-based design firm specializing in the nonprofit sector. With experience in the editorial and non-profit field, Justine cultivated a true passion for design through a sophisticated and heart-felt lens.

Justine holds a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design from American University. In her spare time, she is a volunteer with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. When not working or volunteering Justine enjoys exploring Washington, D.C., and loves to cook and then sample her culinary creations with friends and family.

Senior Designer

Danny McGarvey

A Pennsylvania native, Danny studied graphic design at Millersville University. After a brief stint in the carpentry business and as a drummer for a band, he headed to D.C. to focus full-time on design. Here, he worked for a few noteworthy studios before finding his way to Winking Fish. Danny has produced designs for a number of well-known companies, restaurants and non-profit organizations in the D.C. area. He believes that a strong concept, careful planning and a creative eye are essential to producing quality, memorable design.

Outside the studio, Danny keeps busy with various illustration projects. He can usually be found exploring the city with a sketchbook, biking along one of the areas bike trails or holed up in a favorite coffee shop or bar sipping a venue-appropriate beverage.
